Meaning and Role of a Godparent

At the celebration of the Sacrament of Baptism, Godparents are present to represent the expanded spiritual family of the child and help the parents so that children will profess the faith of their family and live up to it.  A Godparent is a person who assumes, along with the parents, the responsibility for the child’s faith.  The purpose is to ensure that the rich and beautiful faith of the Church is passed on to the child in the most loving and authentic way possible.

As a Godparent, you must be able to live with integrity the Catholic faith handed on to you, as an example for your godchild.

Requirements of a Godparent

1. The Godparent chosen is a practicing Catholic
2. Age: 16 years or older
3. Have received the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. Confirmation certificate must be provided.
4. If married, the Godparent’s marriage is recognized as being valid by the Catholic Church. You must provide Catholic Church marriage certificate.
5. Baptismal certificate with confirmation & marriage notation included will be accepted for proof of Sacraments.
6. Godparents’ signature on affidavit must be witnessed by a parish representative.

El Significado y Papel de un Padrino

En la celebración del sacramento del bautismo, los padrinos están presentes para representar la familia extendida espiritual del niño/a, y ayudan a los padres de modo que los niños profesen la fe de su familia y la vivan al máximo.  Un Padrino es una persona que asume, junto con los padres, la responsabilidad de ayudarle al niño a crecer en su fe.  El propósito es asegurar que la fe rica y hermosa de la Iglesia,  sea transmitida al niño de la manera más cariñosa y más auténtica posible.

Como padrino, usted debe vivir con integridad la fe Católica, como ejemplo para su ahijado/a.

Requisitos de un Padrino:

1. El padrino elegido debe ser un practicante Católico.
2. Edad: 16 años o más.
3. Que haya recibido los Sacramentos de Iniciación: Bautismo, Confirmación, y Eucaristía. Debe proveer certificado de Confirmación.
4. Si están casados, los Padrinos deben estar casados por la Iglesia Católica. Deben de proveer un Certificado de Matrimonio de la Iglesia Católica o un Certificado de Bautismo con anotaciones marginales con Matrimonio.
5. La firma del padrino o madrina en esta forma debe ser atestiguada por un represéntate de la parroquia a la que pertenece.
